Taoist Medicine Principle

The Root Cause of Diseases

Taoist medicine believes the true disease comes from people’s internal well-being. Taoists understand that a human’s personality, together with their psychological and emotional behaviors and activities affect their capacity for receiving Heaven Qi. Even negative thoughts and emotions that are not acted upon still impact the Qi flow inside the body, and are the root of causing diseases. Negative thought and emotions disrupt normal Qi flow and lead to chaotic Qis that cannot protect the body but cause illness. Taoist traditional medicine has summarized nine kinds of chaotic Qis that affect the physical well-being.

Nine Types of Qis and Their Actions

Anger rushes Qi upward Joyfulness slows Qi flow;

Sadness cause Qi deficiency

Fearfulness descends Qi

Coldness contracts Q

Heat causes Qi leakage

Shock disorients Q

Over exhaustion diminishes Qi

Worries & Overthinking Stagnates Qi

Here are some examples, physical ailments generally have their roots in Qi deficiency and imbalances. Problems with the human head is often from a lack of Heaven Qi (heart Qi) not being vibrant and joyful.

Foot problems are often due to one’s earth Qi (kidney Qi) being not vibrant and joyful. Often internal organ problems are due to the five elements of Qi rebelling.

Problems with the four extremities are due to not being in harmony with the seasonal Qi.

Being deaf and mute is due to a lack of receiving the three lights (sun, moon, and stars).

Being sick with a cold or frequently feeling hot is due to the Yin and Yang Qi fighting each other.

All problems are due to a human body being out of order with nature. People can even have problems with ghosts which is due to anger in their Heaven and Earth spirits. If one dies from heat such as warm fibril disease with high fever, that is due to the energy of the greater Yang Qi (Tai Yang heat of the body) being harmful to the body. If one dies of cold, it is due to the Greater Yin (Tai Yin, coldness of body) Qi being harmful to the body. If one suddenly dies, it is due to the punishment Qi (harm energy) being too harsh. Many diseases with either excess or deficiency (lack) of Qi are due to a lack of balance with the seasons (Tai Ping Jing, Chapter 3).

Why One Remains Sick?

If the liver’s spirit travels out and does not return the eyes will lose vision. If the heart spirit is gone, a person’s lips will become greenish white. If the lung’s spirit is exhausted, a person’s nose will be blocked or stuffy. If the kidney’s spirit is leaving, a person will become deaf. If the spleen’s spirit is missing, one’s mouth cannot experience the taste of sweetness. If the head spirit is gone, one can lose consciousness. If the abdominal spirit is missing, the digestion system thus slows down; any food there cannot be transformed into energy and nutrients. If the spirits of the four extremities are gone, one cannot move (Tai Ping Jing, Chapter 3).

How One Can Prevent Illness?

Longevity requires a peaceful heart and a smooth constant steady Heaven Qi flow of the pure spirit consciousness much like a gentle flowing river on Earth. It is constant, peaceful and nurturing. Being in this steady abundant flow of Heaven Qi, a human can never be adversely affected by external evils (pathogens) or harmed by evil spirits. This is the root of longevity, and is why sages meditate most of time.

Why sages live very long life and not fall ill?

Sages understand the Tao of Heaven and Earth, and know how the human body interacts with the changes of cosmic energy. They nourish Yang energy in spring and summer time. They nourish Yin energy in autumn and winter time. They practice daily healthy living principle to nourish their energy and essence. Taoist disciples all learn and follow this classic Chinese medicine book, called <Huang Di Nei Jing>, translated as <Yellow emperor Internal Medicine>.

This classic medicine book came to be available around 200 AD and became the medicine bible for traditional Chinese Medicine. In olden days, scholars who reached to the equivalent level of our modern day college were required to learn this medicine book. Nine out of ten of these scholars were able to practice traditional medicine and their life was guided by this medicine book. That is why traditional Chinese medicine principles have been deeply immersed in the old Chinese culture. These days ordinary people understand the principle of herbs as food. Taoist medicine has a much deeper and wider practice than modern Traditional Chinese Medicine because it is the root of the Traditional Chinese medicine system. Some simple practices can shine a greater light on one’s life.

Taoist Self-Healing Technique

The following states a Taoist method to recover from a long-time illness.  “Spirits and essences often like to stay in empty clean spaces. They do not like dirty or turbid places. If people want to get these spirits back, all they need do is to fast and limit their activities for a while. They can hang a picture of themselves in an aromatic room and meditate there to receive back their spirits. Hundreds of diseases thus will be resolved with this practice. If one does not fast or limit one’s activities, essence and spirits will not return to their body. This is
how Heaven punishes people. Everyone is free to choose their way of living, but there is a price to pay if our choices are not in alignment with the Tao. If one continues to suffer with many diseases, death or terminal illness often result. One thus lives shorter than expected (Tai Ping Jing, Chapter 3).”
