Longevity & Disease Prevention

Diseases prevention is the wisdom of living. Every human developmental stage has its own unique requirement of nutrition and exercise. Learning and understanding how and what our bodies need, from time to time, from season to season, is conscious way of living. The quality of our lives would be much better if we live in harmonious with nature and prevent diseases happening. Drug usage can be greatly reduced or even stopped.

"The ancient sages did not treat those who had already become ill; they did not try to rule those who were already rebellious. Instead, they preferred to educate the people before they rebelled. They treated their patients before they would get sick. Maintaining order rather than correcting disorder is the ultimate principle of wisdom. To cure disease after it has appeared is like digging a well when one feels thirsty or forging weapons after the war has already begun. Isn’t this already too late?"  – Huang Di Nei Jing “Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine” 2nd Century BC

Four Major Disease Categories

Traditionally, diseases were put into 4 major categories. The first type of condition is external condition, if a person takes medicine or getting a treatment, it is like a person fall down and being lifted up. This type of disease is often due to disagree with weather or seasonal changes, or the food and liquid you ate and drank. A common cold is a good example for this type of disease. People often can be cured on its own without medicine or a treatment. However, if a person energy is week, and these external pathogens can invade to deeper level and cause more severe conditions. So early prevention starts here and prevent the external pathogens traveling into deeper level.

The second type of diseases are severe physical conditions that have to take medicine or seeing doctors, otherwise, one can die. With these conditions, intervention with medicine or care by doctors have to apply to get cured. For examples, trauma wounds and bleeding have to be treated to be cured. Diseases like abdominal obstruction and appendicitis can be fatal without treatment. When people with these severe conditions, post-treatment care with natural food and herbs are very important for further healing.

The third type of condition is a type of condition that can’t be helped by any means of medicine or doctor’s treatment. But, it can be cured by chanting and worshiping the ascended masters. These diseases are believed due to emotional disturbance or conflicts with spirits.

The fourth type of condition is a terminal disease, a type of condition that can never be cured, no matter how it is treated. People with such diseases will die anyway. This type of disease likely refers to these genetic defects caused early childhood terminal ill diseases. Old time, there is no terms to describing about genetic defects, but believed it is the results of ancestral karma. A term is called "Cheng Fu 承负", it explains the ancestral karma affect to theie later generations.

These last two conditions, unlike the first two is directly related to more subtle, spiritually related, karma. No medicine can help, but it can be healed through spiritual cleansing, healing and practice. People can clear much karma during their life time.

As we can understand, some diseases have to use medicine, some diseases can never be cured and are terminal diseases, and some diseases are due to spiritual and emotional karma or stresses that normally cannot be healed by medicine, but can be cured and have to be healed through spiritual cleansing. If people accept and knowing what is given then do the best they can to be kind while they are alive, life would be much happier and simpler for them. Miracles may happen.

Kindness Enhances Health and Longevity

A healthy mind, spirit, and emotion are key for good health. A great spiritual practice for a healthier life is to be a kinder person. A fundamental teaching of all religions is giving love and compassion to others. Offering kindness to others is one of the great fortunes for human to have, according to one of the Chinese oldest historian book, named Shang Shu (尚书). Kindness is one of the Heaven's nature, that is offering without considering anything in return. This way, one would never feel that they were being treated unfairly in any circumstance.

Warm and open hearted people are happier, peaceful and content. They know how to forgive others and do not hold on to conflicts inside. Without an open heart, no forgiveness, then there is no peace and love, this will harms one's heart and affects whole body's well being.

The classic Taoist teaching (Tai Shang Gan Ying Bian 太上感应篇), states that if a person acts three kindness of things a day, that is 'speaking kind, seeing kind, and acting kind (语善视善 行善)', within three years there will be a great fortune arrive. However, if a person acts three unkindness of things a day, that is 'speaking unkind, seeing unkind, and acting unkind', within three years there will be a great bad-fortune arrive. Moral and ethical principles are always the standard for the kindness to be valued.

Cultivating Qi

Beside cultivation a good heart and good nature, cultivation Qi, the vital energy is an essential for a life.

The functions of Qi according to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles act as followings:

1)     Warm the body, keep the body in a homeostasis

2)     Give the movement, pushing blood and fluid in and out

3)     Holding and astringent, keep organs and cells in the right position

4)     Protection, keep to protect from infections

5)     Transformation, transform the food and drinks into nutrients

Any obstruction to our vital energy will harm our health. Human health is often affected by the deficiency of Qi, in other word, lack of energy; and stagnation of Qi, that is saying as obstruction of energy flow

Our vital energies comes from three different sources based on TCM theories:

1)      It comes from our parents' essence. In modern understanding, it comes from the activities of DNA, the blue print of our genetics.

2)     It comes the air we breath. The high content of vital energy of air we breath in, the better it is to our health. Go to the nature where with lots of trees or near ocean is always the best to recharge our energies.

3)     It comes from the food we eat. Natural organic food are always the best choice for our food.

Young people on the surge stage of grow, can recharge their energies very quickly and easily. However, when we are getting old, after 50s, 60s, or even older, lack of energy becomes very common symptoms.

What should we do? Supplement right natural herbs and food are highly suggested to people who are experiencing Qi deficiency. Jinshen roots and astragalus are often the common herbs for nourish vital energy of the body. To get the right formula and herbs, you should consult Dr. Wu or other Chinese Medicine herbalist.

August 2016, Dr. Joy Wu gave a presentation to local Rotary club members about the mission of Heavenly Joy Institute, and disease prevention with Traditional Chinese Medicine.
